Kenia Landkarte mit National Parks

Immerse yourself in an unforgettable adventure that combines trekking, safari and climbing Africa’s two highest mountains, Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro.

Experience the second highest mountain range in East Africa, Mount Kenya, whose pointed peaks are named after Maasai chiefs. The Chogoria/Sirimon route with 5 days trekking allows you to go around almost the entire massif of Mount Kenya and experience the majestic volcano in all its splendor as well as its unique flora. The climb to Point Lenana at 4895 meters via the Chogoria route offers breathtaking views of the mountain range and the surrounding mountain lakes sparkling in the morning light.

From there the journey takes you to Kilimanjaro via Amboseli National Park, where you can experience Africa’s fascinating wildlife up close on safari. The Machame Route is a popular and varied route for climbing Africa’s highest peak. This route takes you through various ecosystems including rainforest, heathland, alpine desert and glaciers and offers spectacular views. The acclimatization gained from climbing Mount Kenya will help ensure you can safely reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.

This tour not only offers unforgettable trekking experiences, but also the opportunity to discover the breathtaking landscapes and fascinating wildlife of Africa on safari. Be enchanted by the beauty and diversity of this continent and collect unforgettable memories on your trip through Kenya and Tanzania.

Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi and drive to Naro Moru River Lodge – 175km and 3 hours drive
You will be met in the arrivals area at Nairobi airport and driven to your hotel at the foot of Mount Kenya. You will also meet your mountain guide for the next few days at dinner at the latest. Overnight stay at Naro Moru River Lodge or similar.

Day 2: Nairobi – Chogoria Camp Bandas (3,000m) – approx. 3 hours drive and 4 hours trekking
We start the day by driving to the town of Chogoria (141 km/3 hours) where we meet our support team. There we lace up our hiking boots and hand our luggage to the porters. We hike through the dense bamboo forest up to the camp at the Meru Bandas Huts at an altitude of 2700 m, where we pitch our tents. In the late afternoon we take an exciting trip to a nearby waterhole where antelope, buffalo, zebra and the occasional elephant can be spotted. Overnight stay at Mount Kenya Bandas Camp, (B|L|D).

Day 3: Mt Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Campsite (3,600m), 3hrs/12km hike
The hike begins with spectacular views of the rolling hills ahead and possibly even the snow-capped peaks of Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) high above. This is a comparatively short hike and we will arrive at camp a little earlier than the day before, giving us the opportunity to relax and unwind. After lunch we take a walk around the lake and complete our acclimatization hike to nearby Mugi Hill. Overnight at Lake Ellis Camp, (B|L|D).

Day 4: Lake Ellis – Minto’s Camp (4,200 m), 4 hours/10 km hike
We start early and again follow a ridge up the mountain off the beaten path for about three hours. Finally, at an altitude of about 4,100 m, we meet the tourist route of the normal Chogoria route. From here we enjoy breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley, back to Ithanguni and the northern moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing before we continue for another hour to Minto’s Camp at 4,200 m altitude and enjoy a night’s sleep there. The afternoon can be spent relaxing in the camp, but a 10-minute walk to the “temple” is definitely worth it. The “Temple” is a 150-meter-high vertical cliff whose name derives from the position visitors often assume when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. Overnight stay at Lake Monto’s Camp or similar, (B|L|D).

Day 5: Minto`s Camp – Austrian Camp (4,760m), 4 hours/7 km hike
Today we start our hike by climbing at the foot of huge rock faces. From the top we have an excellent view of Mt. Kenya. After a few hours of climbing you reach Tooth Col. From here we hike to the Austrian Camp, where we have dinner and spend the night.

Day 6: Austrian Camp – Point Lenana (4,985 m) – Old Moses (3,340 m) – Nairobi – approx. 10 hours/24km hike
Between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., after a small breakfast snack, we set off for the third highest peak of the Mount Kenya massif. We climb for an hour over bare rock and scree slopes characteristic of the Alpine region until we reach Point Lenana at 4,985 m altitude. At the summit we have a breathtaking view of the rugged Mount Kenya massif, where several mountain lakes shimmer in the golden morning light. On particularly clear days, even Kilimanjaro is visible on the horizon. We then climb back to the Austrian Hut for breakfast. The descent is along the south side on the Sirimion route, where we will enjoy a late breakfast in Mackinder Valley. We then go back down to Old Moses to be picked up from there. We will be back in Nairobi around 6 p.m. Overnight stay at the hotel in Nairobi (B|L).

Day 7: Adventure drive to Amboseli National Park – approximately 4 hours drive
After a restful night in Nairobi, we will be picked up the next morning by our personal driver who will take us directly to the breathtaking Amboseli National Park. Amboseli National Park lies in the shadow of Africa’s most famous attraction, the majestic Kilimanjaro, our next peak. After a leisurely check-in and a refreshing lunch, another exciting game drive in Amboseli National Park is on the agenda in the afternoon. It is very likely that we will see giraffes and elephants, gazelles, hyenas, buffaloes, lions and maybe even a leopard. Pure Africa, in its full splendor! Overnight stay in the hotel (B|M|D).

Day 8: Game drive in Amboseli National Park and drive to Moshi
On the ninth day we have the opportunity in the morning to explore the fascinating wildlife in Amboseli National Park. We then make our way to Moshi for our next adventure, the highest point in Africa. Overnight stay in the hotel, (F).

Day 9: Arusha – Machame Gate (1,790 m) – Machame Camp (3,010 m) 2 hours drive and approx. 6 hours hike
After breakfast we will be driven together with the crew to the entrance gate of the Kilimanjaro National Park, to the Machame Gate. While our guide is busy with the registration forms, we can watch our mountain team/crew preparing for the climb and packing their bags. As soon as the registration is completed and the team is prepared, our Kilimanjaro adventure begins. In no time we find ourselves deep in the beautiful rainforest with old trees, ancient ferns, lianas, lichens and mosses that gently cover the ground and hang down from the trees. If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to admire the beautiful black and white Colobus monkeys in the treetops. After 5 to 6 hours we reach today’s destination – Machame Camp, which is located just above the tree line at 3,010 m. Here, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, we have our first dinner, followed by an overnight stay in tents. Overnight stay at Machame Camp (B|L|D).

Day 10: Machame Camp (3,010 m) to New Shira Camp (3,845 m) – approx. 6 hour hike
We continue our hike early in the morning, the path now becomes steeper and the landscape turns into moorland and heathland. The open landscape allows us to see the impressive mountain range of Kilimanjaro. Today’s stage is shorter than the previous day and we will arrive at New Shira Camp in the late afternoon. The camp offers breathtaking mountain views and during sunset the evening sun illuminates the rock face and glacier of Kibo.
Mount Kilimanjaro was formed as a result of active continental rifting and consists of three volcanic cones, the Shira/Shira Ridge (3,962 m), the Mawenzi (5,148 m) and the Kibo (5,895 m). The first volcanic activity is believed to have begun about 1 million years ago. Overnight stay at Shira Camp (B|L|D).

Day 11: New Shira Camp (3,845 m) – Lava Tower (4,640 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m) – approx. 7 hours
Today we will climb approximately 800 meters but will be camping at an elevation only slightly higher than last night. This allows the body to acclimatize better. The hike begins with a long climb over the Shira Plateau towards the Lava Tower (4,640 m). The vegetation becomes sparser and the landscape turns into an Afro-Alpine desert. The route takes us through the extensive Barranco Valley with its enchanting lobelias and huge Senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours we reach the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp with its dream scenery down into the plains and up to the summit of Kibo (5,895 m). Overnight stay at Barranco Camp (B|L|D).

Day 12: Barranco Camp (3,960 m) – Barafu Camp (4,640 m)
Today’s route begins with the climb to the “Barranco Wall”. Attention and sure-footedness are the top priority and your guides will help you if necessary. We follow the ridge with several ascents and descents and can enjoy the wonderful view of the southern glacier of Kibo. We have lunch in the Karanga Valley, followed by a 2 to 3 hour climb to Barafu Camp (4,640 m). Here we can relax and have dinner very early, at 5:00 p.m., and go to sleep around 7:00 p.m. The climb to the summit begins at midnight, so it is important that we have a good rest beforehand. Overnight stay at Barafu Camp (B|L|D).

Day 13: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Millenium Camp (3,820 m) – approx. 12 to 14 hours
After a hot tea and a light snack, the climb begins around midnight. Dressed warmly and with the light of our headlamps, we climb the scree slopes of Kibo. It’s steep and uphill in serpentines. After 5 to 7 hours of climbing in the dark, we reach Stella Point (5,756 m), the crater rim of Kilimanjaro. From here you can expect strong winds and cold temperatures. Another 1 to 2 hours of climbing along the crater ridge takes us to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Here we see Mount Kilimanjaro in all its glory and enjoy the 360° view over the landscape at sunrise. You are now standing on the “Roof of Africa”. The comparatively easy but long descent follows almost the same route. The temperatures now change from minus degrees to high plus degrees. Shortly before noon we should arrive at Barafu Camp, where the porters and the cook are waiting for us with tasty dishes. After a warm meal and a well-deserved break of about 1 to 2 hours, we set off for Millenium Camp (3,820 m), where dinner and a well-deserved break await us. Overnight stay at Millenium Camp (B|L|D).

Day 14: Millenium Camp (3,820 m) – Mweka Gate (1,630 m) – Arusha – approx. 3 hours hike and 2 hours drive
The final stage of our impressive adventure begins after breakfast with a traditional farewell ceremony for our mountain team. Then it’s a gentle 2 to 3 hour descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where our driver is waiting for us. He takes us back to our hotel in Arusha. After a wonderfully warm shower, you can relax at the hotel pool for the rest of the day. Overnight stay at the Hotel Ilboru Safari Lodge (F).

Day 15: Departure drive to Arusha-Kilimanjaro International Airport or follow-up module Safari/Zanzibar
Free time until departure. Our driver will pick you up from the hotel according to your flight details and drive you to the airport (F).

We reserve the right to make changes to the program due to special events, force majeure or weather reasons.

Visa

Tanzani
To enter Tanzania, a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and a tourist visa are required. The visa for German citizens can be applied for three to four weeks before departure at the Tanzania embassy (approx. 50 EUR plus postage). Alternatively, the visa is also available upon entry into Tanzania (50 USD, to be paid in cash on site). We recommend this variant, it is less complicated and cheaper. For international departures from Zanzibar, a departure tax of USD 30 and a health insurrance is required.

Kenya
Since 2024, travel to Kenya has required an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to replace the traditional visa. The eTA costs around $30 including service fees. The application is made online using the German-language form at https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de and should be made at least 72 hours before departure. Once approved, the eTA is valid for 90 days, after which a new application must be made. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the planned entry date and have at least two blank pages to apply for the eTA. When entering Kenya, you must present the printed eTA along with your passport and return ticket.
These visa and passport regulations apply to EU countries and Switzerland. Other citizens would like to inquire at the respective country consulate.

Insurance
A travel health insurance (with rescue costs) is essential for your own safety and a prerequisite for booking our trips. In the event of an accident in the mountains or on safari that requires a helicopter, the helicopter will not take off until full coverage of the costs has been clarified.
We strongly recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance. Flights at bargain prices in particular cannot usually be rebooked or cancelled free of charge. In Tanzania there could also be complications with the weather, your health, etc., which would force you to abandon your trip.
We asked ERGO Reiseversicherung to put together different service packages for you. You can book the right travel health insurance for you at https://www.reiseversicherung.de.

It should be noted that geoDiscovery Tours only recommends that its guests book travel insurance through ERGO and assumes no responsibility for the contractual content between the travel guest and the insurance provider. It is up to each guest to book their travel insurance through ERGO or another provider.

Vaccinations
Tanzania
When entering the mainland of Tanzania and Zanzibar directly from Germany/Switzerland and Austria, no compulsory vaccinations are required, in particular no yellow fever vaccination. This also applies if you enter in transit via a yellow fever endemic area, as long as you do not leave the airport during the stopover and the stay is less than 12 hours. However, there should be vaccination protection against tetanus, hepatitis A, diphtheria and polio. Vaccinations against hepatitis B and typhoid are recommended for long stays. We recommend that you consult your family doctor in good time. Further information can be found on the Federal Foreign Office website.
Kenya
There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for travelers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria traveling to Kenya (as of November 2023). However, it is advisable to check and, if necessary, refresh your vaccination status for diphtheria, polio and tetanus. Vaccination against hepatitis A and hepatitis B is also recommended. Although it is recommended to be immunized against yellow fever, this is not mandatory for tourists from Germany traveling directly to Kenya (for example on a direct flight from Germany). However, travelers from yellow fever endemic areas must present proof of vaccination that is at least 10 days old. For further information, please see the medical information from the Federal Foreign Office.

Best time to travel
For trekking: Due to Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator, this region is not exposed to the extremes of winter and summer weather, but rather the dry and rainy seasons. The best time to climb Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya are therefore the warmest and driest months. There are two different trekking seasons that are optimal for climbing Mt Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru; from December-March and from June-October. January-March is generally colder than June-October and there is a higher chance of snow on the summit. March, April, May and November are the wettest months and are not ideal for trekking. During the trekking tours the temperatures will be +25°C during the day and between 10°C to -5°C at night. On the summit day, temperatures of down to -20°C and sometimes strong winds can be expected.

For safari trips: In general, Kenya and Tanzania can be visited for safari tours 12 months of the year. April-May and October-November represent the rainy season in both countries. The rainiest time is April-May (here a raincoat is a must). We advise against traveling here. The second rainy season October-November has lower rainfall. The rainy season can be a beautiful time to visit as the vegetation is at its most lush and green. Precipitation typically falls in short showers interspersed with rays of sunshine, making for excellent photography. To experience the annual peak of the great migration in the Serengeti, Tanzania should be visited between June and November and Kenya between July and September. This epic natural event sees millions of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes migrate north to the Masai Mara in Kenya. However, if you want to avoid the large tourist crowds that migration brings, it is beneficial to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania during the first dry season from January to March, when the wildebeest calving season is at its peak.

Tour program
The travel program is optimally coordinated for all of the trips we recommend. However, it can happen that roads are closed or impassable without prior notice, that waiting times of several hours arise due to traffic jams or fuel shortages, that access to sites can be closed for various reasons, or other restrictions such as flight delays or even cancellations due to bad weather, strikes, Health of the participants, a pandemic or unfavourable conditions during trekking make the implementation of the travel program difficult or, in the worst case, impossible. However, our local guides are prepared for such situations and will endeavour to carry out all program points to your satisfaction. The inconvenience is usually limited. Nevertheless, it must be pointed out at this point that, for the reasons mentioned, program changes are possible at any time and are not the responsibility of the organizer. Any resulting costs are borne by the traveller. We ask for your understanding.

Flying in Tanzania
Domestic flights in Tanzania may be postponed for days due to limited airspace or weather conditions, or for technical or other reasons. Under these exceptional circumstances, our team will try – in cooperation with you – to relocate the tour to other regions or to organize road transport. The risk of delay and cancellation of these flights is borne by all participants.
In the event of a delay of several days, all participants are personally responsible for changing their flight home at least 48 hours in advance. We are of course happy to help you.

The domestic flights booked by us are:

  • Air Tanzania
  • Precision Air
  • Flightlink
