With Nepal trekking tours in particular, proper acclimatisation is the key to a safe and successful tour. Following important altitude rules protects against altitude sickness and ensures that body and mind cope well with the strain at high altitude.

Why acclimatisation is so important on Nepal trekking tours

When trekking in Nepal you often climb above 3,000 or even 5,000 metres. At such altitudes the air pressure decreases, and so does the proportion of oxygen available to your body. For example, at sea level the air contains about 21% oxygen. At 3,000 metres only around 14 to 15% oxygen is effectively available, and at 5,000 metres only around 11%. This drastic reduction leads to lower oxygen uptake in the blood and puts a heavy strain on the heart and circulation.

The body reacts by increasing breathing and heart rate to take in as much oxygen as possible. This adaptation takes time and works only slowly. Ascending too quickly can lead to altitude sickness, with symptoms ranging from mild headaches all the way to life-threatening conditions such as high-altitude pulmonary or cerebral oedema.

The most important altitude rules for Nepal trekking tours

1. Climb high – sleep low

Climb higher during the day, sleep lower at night – this supports optimal adaptation to the altitude.

2. Walk slowly and steadily

A slow pace reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

3. Avoid overexertion

A calm pulse and even breathing are important so that the body can focus on acclimatisation.

4. Drink plenty of fluids

At least 3-4 litres of water per day support the adaptation.

5. Do not skip altitudes

A maximum of 300-500 metres of sleeping-altitude gain per day plus rest/acclimatisation days.

6. Take warning signs seriously

Do not ignore headaches, nausea or fatigue.

7. Avoid alcohol and strong coffee

Both can make altitude adaptation more difficult.

8. Follow the guide’s advice

Experienced guides are trained and look after your safety.

Professional briefings

We give our guests detailed briefings on altitude adaptation and behaviour at high altitude.

The role of trained guides and porters

Well-trained guides recognise altitude problems early and act professionally. Porters carry your luggage so you can focus on the trekking and save energy.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about Nepal trekking tours and acclimatisation

How quickly should I ascend?
A maximum of 300-500 metres of sleeping altitude per day is ideal. In addition, regular rest days are important.

What are the first signs of altitude sickness?
Headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness or loss of appetite.

Can I take medication against altitude sickness?
Medications such as acetazolamide can be supportive but should only be used after consulting a doctor. The best “altitude medicine”, however, is consistently following the altitude rules: slow ascent, enough rest days and good hydration.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or injure myself?
On our beginner tours an assistant guide accompanies us from 4 participants onwards, on more demanding tours from 3 participants. In the event of health problems, the assistant guide safely accompanies the participants who are not feeling well during the descent. Should descending on foot not be possible, we organise a helicopter operation as quickly as possible. The evacuation is carried out swiftly and the affected guest is flown back to Kathmandu, where comprehensive medical care is guaranteed.

How important is equipment?
Very important – good clothing and shoes protect against cold and wet, pulse oximeters help with monitoring.

Why do I need a porter?
Porters carry your luggage so you can focus on the trekking and save energy.

Why do I need an experienced mountain guide?
Even if the routes are well marked, an experienced mountain guide is indispensable. Our guides know the area, speak the local language and know how to act quickly and safely in emergencies. They help you follow the altitude rules, provide valuable information about the country and its people and are reliable companions along the way. In addition, their work supports the local communities and jobs.

Packing list tips for Nepal trekking tours

Functional underwear and breathable clothing

Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots and trekking socks

Well-fitting backpack

Warm, well-insulating sleeping bag (at least comfort limit down to -10 °C for tours with sleeping altitudes above 4,000 m)

Rain and wind jacket

Hiking trousers, both light and warm/windproof

Hat, gloves and a buff or scarf

Sunglasses and sunscreen with a high sun protection factor

Water bottle and hydration system (at least 3 litres capacity)

Personal medication and first-aid kit

Trekking poles to relieve the knees and provide stabilityYou will receive a detailed equipment list from us after your booking.

Viewpoint from Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m, with views of Mt.
