LADAKH – Nubra Valley via Lasermo La – Camping Trek

Ladakh Ladakh

Trekking Map

On this demanding tour you leave the Nubra Valley towards the west and cross the 5,400 m high Lasermo La (pass).
The tour leads through impressive gorges, through mountain deserts, barley growing areas and meadows with colorful flowers that accompany the way to the picturesque monastery in the village of Phyang. In the Nubra Valley you will experience authentic Tibetan culture with well-preserved monasteries such as Diskit and Samstaling and admire their special re-gional architecture.

This is a relatively new hiking trail in a less visited region of Ladakh. Nubra, also called the ‘Valley of Flowers’ in the local language, lies like an oasis in the middle of the mountain desert and was part of the trade route between Tibet and Turkestan. The Nubra Valley is located about 150 km northeast of the city of Leh and is formed from the valley of the Shyok River and the valley of the Nubra, fed by the huge Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram, which flows into the Shyok at Diskit. Other special features of the region are the two-humped Bactrian camel, as well as the numerous sand dunes, which give you the feeling of roaming the Central Asian Gobi desert.

This trekking tour requires good mountain hiking experience, altitude tolerance and good health.

Trip Details

Day 01: Arrival in Delhi
Upon arrival in Delhi, you will be met in the arrival hall at the airport and then transferred to the hotel. Overnight at the Hotel Ashok Country Resort.

Day 02: Flight to Leh (3,500m). Most of the day relaxation in the hotel, evening tour in the bazaar – welcome dinner
You will be driven to the airport early in the morning. After an impressive one-hour flight over the high Himalayan peaks, you will arrive in Leh at 3,500 m. You will be brought to the hotel and spend the rest of the morning resting and acclimatizing for the first time. On this day you have to expect physical reactions (e.g. headache, shortness of breath) to the unfamiliar altitude. After a welcome lunch, we take a short walk to the Leh bazaar in the afternoon. This will be a leisurely stroll, during which we can get used to the special atmosphere of this city. Overnight stay in the Hotel Glacier View or similar category, (B|D).

Day 03: Acclimatization walks in and around Leh
Visit of the Gönpas Shankar & the Shanti Stupa, evening walk to the Tsemo Gönpa, which was built above the Leh Palace. Overnight in the hotel, (B|D).

Day 04: Leh – Hunder (3,150m) – 126km / 4 hours drive
We leave the city of Leh and drive east into the Nubra Valley, where we cross the highest passable road Khardung La at 5,602m to reach Hunder. In the afternoon we make a short visit to Diskit Monastery, which is not only the oldest but also the largest monastery in the Nubra region. The monastery was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Sangpo and belongs to the yellow hat sect of Buddhism (Sangpo was a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug). Overnight at the Hotel Karma Inn or similar category, (B|D).

Day 05: In Hunder – Camel Safari
There is an optional camel safari (with a two-humped Bactrian camel) in the nearby sand dunes. For those who do not want to use this option, walks around the village of Hundar are recommended. Overnight at hotel, (B|L|D)

Day 06: Hunder to Wachan (3,900m) – 5/6 hours walk
We drive about 3 km to the Gönpa (part of a Buddhist monastery) in Hundar and visit the monastery complex until our team is ready to load all equipment onto the ponies and start our hike to Wachan, following the river and the gorges. After about an hour the path at Zongpa becomes increasingly narrow and steep and we continue uphill, descend to reach Skarche, follow the river for about two hours until we arrive in Wachan. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D)

Day 07: Wachan to Snia Sumdo (4,200m) – 3 hours walk
Today we face a steep ascent, and we get to Dok Yogma, a small settlement on the way. Our hike continues up the valley. The Snia valley is the first large valley on the right. After this somewhat easier half-day hike, we cross the valley on the right and set up camp shortly after the crossroads around noon. So we still have enough time in the afternoon to explore the surrounding landscape. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D).

Day 08: Snia Sumdo to Pullu (4,600m) – 5/6 hours walk
After a quiet night, a nice walk through the Snia valley awaits us this morning, during which we follow the river of the same name and, if necessary, have to cross it several times. The trail climbs the valley constantly, but not steeply, while the whole time you have breathtaking views of the 6,000 m high peaks in the background. We pass several shepherds’ camps on our way up the valley and set up camp at a crossroads near the river. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D).

Day 09: Pullu to Jingmoche (4560m) – 6/7 hours walk
A descent at the beginning will take us to the point where the Sniu Sumdo and Thanglasgo valleys cross. From here we descend continuously as we cross pastures, follow the watercourses and then have a pleasant hike of about four to five hours ahead of us. Finally we reach Jhingmoche at an altitude of 4,510m. The place is very popular with the local shepherds who drive their sheep, yaks and dzos (cross of cattle and yak) up here to graze in the summer. There are some who come here from Hundar and spend the summer months in makeshift huts with their entire families. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D).

Day 10: Jingmoche to the foot of Lasermo La (4,800m) – 5/6 hours walk
Our destination today is the base of Lasermo La, which we want to cross tomorrow. From the tent camp we follow the river upstream through a valley with beautiful, extensive meadows where yaks and dzos graze. We will reach the camp in the afternoon and this will also be the highest overnight spot on the hike. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D).

Day 11: Crossing Lasermo La (5,400m) and hike to Phyang Sumdo (4,510m) – 7 hours walk
Today we reach the highest point on our trek. We set off early and begin our ascent, during which we reach the top of the pass at 5,400m after two to three hours. The view extends to the spectacular Karakoram in one direction and to Ladakh in the other direction. From here we gradually descend to Murabak, another region with green meadows, and finally descend to our camp at Phyang Sumdo at an altitude of 4,510m. This will be our last night on the hike. Overnight in tent camp, (B|L|D).

Day 12: Trek to Phyang (3,900m) – 3/4 hour walk and drive to Leh
We say goodbye to the green pastures, and by the time we reach the village of Phyang the landscape becomes increasingly arid and barren. There is a monastery on the way, which is ideal for a short visit before we head back to the main road. A half hour drive brings us back to the hotel in Leh. Overnight at Hotel Glacier View, (B|D).

Day 13: Day at leisure
Today is the last day in Ladakh and free for individual activities. Perhaps you can buy a few more souvenirs, or let the atmosphere of this country with its unusual views, colors, sounds and smells affect you once more as you say goodbye. Overnight at Hotel Glacier View, (B|D).

Day 14: Flight to Delhi, in the afternoon short sightseeing in Delhi
You will be transferred to the airport for an early flight to Delhi. Depending on your arrival time in Delhi, you can get your first impressions by visiting the center with a visit to the Indian Gate and past other buildings that are symbolic of colonial architecture. Overnight at the Hotel Jay Pee Siddharth, (B).

Day 15: Optional day trip to Agra by train or free for custom activities. In the evening transfer to the airport for the return flight
Depending on your flight schedule, there is an option to visit the Taj Mahal before flying home. We take the train to Agra and take a short trip to the famous Taj Mahal, the 17th century mausoleum of Mumtaz, which was built by her husband, the then Mughal King Shah Jehan. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also one of the seven new wonders of the world due to its extraordinary beauty and perfect architecture. After returning to Delhi and after dinner you will be driven to the international airport to say goodbye, (B).

We reserve the right to make program changes due to special events, force majeure or weather reasons.

About Ladakh
Ladakh is one of the highest regions in the world. When you land in the capital of the region, Leh, you will already be at an altitude of 3,500 m. We spend the first few days of our Ladakh trips sightseeing in order to ensure that you adapt to the change in altitude. You will see Leh’s old town as well as the most beautiful Buddhist monasteries and villages in the Indus valley. Here, there are numerous opportunities for meditation in the monasteries and meditation schools. Please contact us if you are interested. All our tours are conducted by local trained and licensed guides. At the end of our tours, we offer the opportunity for you to travel to Agra in order to admire the world-famous Taj Mahal. We also offer the option of extending your trip to Kashmir/Srinanagar on request. The houseboats on Dal Lake are the perfect way to relax after the tour.

Visa
A visa is always required for entry to India. Since November 2014, under certain conditions, you can apply for an electronic tourist visa (e-Tourist Visa – e-Tv). You can find a list of the requirements for an electronic visa at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html. You can also apply for a visa under the link. Please note that the tourist visa must be applied for in good time (at least 28 days before the start of your visit) so that no travel complications occur. If you have any questions, we will be happy to help you.

Vaccinations
No specific vaccinations are required for travelling to Ladakh (India). However, vaccinations against hepatitis, tetanus, diphtheria, polio and typhoid are recommended. We advise you to speak your family doctor approx. 3 months before your trip and in the case of physical weaknesses, a health check should be carried out beforehand.

Insurance
Travel health insurance (with recovery costs) is essential for your own safety and a precondition for participation in our trips. In the event of an accident in the mountains which requires a helicopter rescue, the helicopter will not take off before the responsibility for the cost is clarified. The conclusion of travel cancellation insurance is highly recommended. In the case of bargain price flights in particular, changes or cancellations generally can’t be made free of charge. In Nepal complications with the weather or with your health could make it necessary to break off your journey.
We have requested ERGO (Reiseversicherung) to create various service packages for you. You can book travel health insurance at https://www.reiseversicherung.de/vrv/partner/ep-Assistent.html?/data/agent/hagtnr=027256&/data/agent/nagtnr=000000.
