What is the Chomolhari Trek?
The Chomolhari Trek is one of the most famous treks in Bhutan and leads through the remote high mountains of Jigme Dorji National Park. It is named after the sacred mountain Chomolhari (also: Jomolhari), which is considered the seat of a female mountain goddess and rises majestically to 7,326 metres – right on the border with Tibet.
The classic trek takes about 8 to 9 days, usually starts in Shana (near Paro) and, depending on the variant, ends in Dodena or Thimphu. It is moderate to demanding and requires good fitness and acclimatisation, as some passes are above 4,800 metres.

- Autumn (late September to November): Clear views of the mountains, stable weather.
What you should bring
- Functional underwear and breathable clothing
- Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots and trekking socks
- Well-fitting backpack
- Warm, well-insulating sleeping bag (at least comfort limit down to -10 °C for tours with sleeping altitudes above 4,000 m)
- Down jacket, rain jacket and wind jacket
- Hiking trousers, both light and warm/windproof
- Hat, gloves and a buff or scarf
- Sunglasses and sunscreen with a high sun protection factor
- Water bottle and hydration system (at least 3 litres capacity) and thermos flask
- Personal medication and first-aid kit, trekking poles to relieve the knees and provide stability
