Visa / arrival

Arrival in Bhutan is usually by flight to Paro, the country’s only international airport. There are connections via Nepal (Kathmandu), India (e.g. Delhi or other larger airports) and via Bangkok. At times, there are also flight connections via Dubai to Paro.
The visa fees for Bhutan are included in the trip price. The visa application is handled by geoDiscovery Tours. The visa fees for Nepal and India are not included in the trip price and must be applied for by you. Your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of entry and have at least two free pages.

Vaccinations

At the moment, no vaccinations are required for travel to Bhutan. However, vaccination protection against tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A should be in place. We recommend consulting your family doctor in good time, approximately three months before your trip. Insurance 

Travel health insurance (including rescue costs) is essential for your own safety and a prerequisite for booking our tours. In the event of an accident in the high mountains of Bhutan that requires a helicopter rescue, the helicopter usually only takes off once full cost coverage has been confirmed. Taking out trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Flights to Bhutan in particular often cannot be rebooked or cancelled free of charge. Furthermore, situations can arise on site, for example due to weather conditions, health problems or other unforeseeable events, that make cutting the trip short necessary.

Money 

Bhutan’s currency is the Ngultrum (Nu.). 1 EUR is approximately 100 Nu. The Ngultrum has the same exchange rate as the Indian Rupee.
Visa and credit cards are only accepted in very few places. Travellers are advised to always carry some cash with them (US dollars or euros).

Time zone 

Bhutan Standard Time is six hours ahead of GMT, and there is only one time zone throughout the country.

Climate 

The central valleys such as Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang, Mongar, Trashigang and Lhuentse have a subtropical climate shaped by comparatively mild conditions but also cool winters. Thimphu, Trongsa and Bumthang, on the other hand, have a harsher climate, with sometimes heavy snowfalls that frequently lead to pass closures in winter. The monsoon brings sometimes very intense rainfall in summer. In general, eastern Bhutan is somewhat warmer than the west, while the south of the country has a markedly tropical climate.
From mid-March to the end of May, spring prevails in the higher-lying valleys, with pleasantly warm days around 20 °C and cool nights. The summer months begin in June with temperatures between approximately 27 °C and 29 °C. The rainy season usually sets in around mid-June and lasts until about mid-September. Clear blue skies and mild weather characterise the autumn months from late September to late November. Winter lasts from December to February. Daytime temperatures on sunny days can range between approximately 16 °C and 18 °C, while temperatures at night can drop below freezing.
