Dashain, also known as Vijaya Dashami, is one of the most important festivals in Nepal and is celebrated by Hindus, both in Nepal and in some parts of India. It usually takes place in September or October and lasts 15 days.
Dashain celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura, which symbolises the triumph of good over evil. It is a time for family gatherings, when relatives come together to celebrate. On the tenth day, known as Vijaya Dashami, people receive Tika (a mixture of yoghurt, rice and red powder) from older family members, symbolising blessings and good fortune. Jamara, young grass shoots, are cultivated and blessed during the celebrations. Many people make offerings, including animals such as goats and chickens, to give thanks to the gods. Families prepare traditional dishes and sweets to celebrate the festival.
In many cities, parades and festivities are held in which people dance and sing in traditional clothing. Dashain is not only a religious but also a cultural festival that upholds the values of family, respect and community. Overall, Dashain is a time of celebration, reflection and new beginnings that reflects the heart and soul of Nepalese culture.
