NEPAL – UPPER MUSTANG – THE FORGOTTEN KINGDOM
A long-cherished dream came true when we happened to come across geoDiscovery Tours.
Even after the first conversations with Ms. Kolay, we felt very well advised and immediately decided
to travel with geoDiscovery Tours to the “mystical forgotten kingdom of Upper Mustang”.
Since this was our first trekking tour to Nepal, of course there were many questions, which were always answered
very attentively and in detail.
A warm welcome in Kathmandu, the lovely hotel, the exciting and highly interesting
sightseeing tour delighted us right from the start of this trip.
After spectacular domestic flights, we started our trek through the Kali Gandaki Valley, the deepest
valley on earth, framed by magnificent sandstone massifs. Thanks to the slow increase in altitude
we could acclimatise wonderfully and had no problems at all with the
adjustment to altitude! Our guide Laxman fulfilled all wishes, and our porter Dependra carried
our luggage almost effortlessly and always in good spirits, up and down…
We passed pretty little villages with their beautiful chörten, the deep faith of the people visible at every step
through their prayer wheels. We were overwhelmed by the
Buddhist influences along the way, with small prayer sites and prayer flags everywhere. Through the
simple way of life of the villagers, we felt transported back to the previous century.
Each day was marked by fabulous views of the rocky landscapes, from desert-like barren to
deep red canyon-like gorges. Trained by the constant up- and downhill walking, we tackled
the 3,950 m high Nyi La Pass almost effortlessly – what a mountain panorama!
Mystical moments and an almost spiritual aura we experienced at the long Mani Wall in Chemi,
the slowly decaying chörten nearby clearly showed the transience of earthly things.
Also the unstoppably crumbling, once-beautiful summer palace of the king in Tsarang
points to a once-prosperous culture. In Ghar Gompa, one of the oldest holy places in
Nepal, recognisable from afar by the countless prayer flags, we watched
pilgrim women, beautiful in their Nepalese costume, at prayer.
What a trip, what colours and inspirations!
