Tihar is the second-largest Nepalese festival, followed by Chhath. The festival is of great significance, as it honours not only people and the gods but also the animals — crow, cow and dog — that maintain an intimate relationship with humans. People paint or create colourful patterns (rainbow colours) on the floor of living rooms or courtyards to welcome the gods and goddesses of Hinduism, mainly the goddess Laxmi.
