Detailed itinerary

• Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu airport – briefing and welcome dinner

  After your arrival at Kathmandu airport you will be picked up and driven to your hotel. In the late afternoon we will go through all the details of the upcoming trip together with you. In the evening we invite you to a relaxed welcome dinner at which you have the chance to get to know your fellow travellers. Overnight at Hotel Dwarika’s Kathmandu or an accommodation of comparable category (D).

• Day 2: Kathmandu sightseeing – Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath

  Today we discover Kathmandu with an experienced local guide. Our first stop is the famous Swayambhunath temple, also known as the “Monkey Temple”. A long stairway leads us to this significant Buddhist sanctuary, from which we can enjoy a magnificent view over the city. Afterwards we visit the Hindu temple complex of Pashupatinath on the banks of the Bagmati river, which is also known for its ritual cremations. We then visit the Buddhist Boudhanath Stupa, adorned with colourful prayer flags and for centuries an important pilgrimage site. Here we experience the special atmosphere as the faithful walk around the stupa, turn prayer wheels and recite mantras (kora). • Day 3: Flight Kathmandu to Paro (2,280 m) – drive to Thimphu (2,320 m) | approx. 55 km / 1 hr

  After our arrival at the international airport in Paro, we are warmly welcomed by our tour guide. If the flight time allows, we first visit the imposing Paro Rinpung Dzong — one of the finest examples of traditional Bhutanese architecture. After lunch we drive along the Paro and Thimphu river valleys to the capital, Thimphu. In the late afternoon we take a leisurely walk through the city, discover local shops and bazaars and see the inhabitants in their traditional clothing. A visit to the Memorial Chorten is also possible — a place of quiet prayer and spiritual reflection. Overnight at Pemako Thimphu (B|L|D).

• Day 4: Thimphu (2,320 m) – Dochu La pass (3,050 m) – Punakha (1,250 m) | approx. 75 km / 3 hrs of driving

  Today we drive over the scenically spectacular Dochu La pass, where we can enjoy the panoramic view of the eastern Himalayan peaks over a hot drink. Along the way we stop in Mesina for a lunch break. Later we reach Punakha, which lies considerably lower and has a subtropical climate. There we visit the famous Chimi Lhakhang, the “Temple of Fertility”, picturesquely set among rice terraces in the village of Sopsokha. Optionally, we can also visit the small farmers’ market of Kaja Throm. After checking in at the hotel, there is time at your leisure — those who wish can take part in traditional archery, do a cookery course or enjoy a hot stone bath (some of which are subject to a fee). • Day 5: Punakha (1,250 m) – Wangdue (approx. 1,350 m) – Gangtey / Phobjikha (2,900 m) | approx. 85 km / 3 hrs of driving

  In the morning we visit the impressive Punakha Dzong — one of the most beautiful and historically significant monastic fortresses in the country, picturesquely set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. Afterwards we continue on to the Phobjikha Valley to Gangtey. Along the way we stop in Wangdue Phodrang and visit the historic 17th-century dzong. In the afternoon we reach the remote Phobjikha Valley, where we visit Gangtey monastery and gain a first impression of traditional rural life and the wide landscape. • Day 6: Gangtey / Phobjikha (2,900 m) | approx. 3–4 hrs

  Hike
  Today we explore the Phobjikha Valley on foot. We hike on the picturesque Tenkhor Yuetshe Sum Trail through charming villages with typical farmhouses. The path continues over the Gangtey Nature Trail through forested areas to the village of Gopho. The return route runs through wetland meadows by Khewa Lhakhang and across a bridge back to the road, where our vehicle picks us up. In the afternoon we visit the Information Centre of the black-necked cranes, which is dedicated to the protection of these endangered migratory birds. The rest of the day is at your leisure. • Day 7: Gangtey (2,900 m) – Thimphu (2,320 m) – Paro (2,280 m) | approx. 180 km / 6 hrs of driving

  Today we drive back to Paro with a stop in Thimphu. There we visit the tradition-rich astrological institute Pangri Zampa, which compiles the Bhutanese calendar and offers astrological readings. Afterwards we hike for about an hour from the Sangaygang transmission tower to Druk Wangditse temple, from which we enjoy a magnificent view over the Thimphu Valley. We then visit the monumental Buddha Dordenma statue, which towers high above the valley. In the late afternoon we reach Paro. Overnight at Zhiwa Ling Hotel (B|L|D).

  

  

  

• Day 8: Paro (2,280 m) – Tiger's Nest monastery (approx. 3,120 m) | approx. 30 min of driving / 5–6 hrs of hiking

  Early in the morning we begin our hike to the world-famous Tiger’s Nest monastery (Taktshang), which clings spectacularly to a cliff face 900 metres above the valley floor. We need about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the cafeteria with viewpoint. Those who wish can climb further on to the monastery (another 1.5 to 2 hours). The return walk takes around 2 to 3 hours in total. After the descent we have a late lunch — depending on the schedule, in town or at the cafeteria. The afternoon is available for further sightseeing or a leisurely stroll through Paro. • Day 9: Departure from Paro – flight to Kathmandu – drive to Bhaktapur – sightseeing

  Early in the morning our tour guide takes us to the airport in Paro, from where we fly back to Kathmandu. After our arrival in Kathmandu we are warmly welcomed and then drive to the royal city of Bhaktapur.
  Bhaktapur, also known as the “City of Devotees”, is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Nepal and a living open-air museum. The city impresses with its artfully decorated temples, palaces and narrow lanes, rich in history and tradition. Especially worth seeing are Durbar Square with its magnificent pagoda roofs, the 55-Window Palace, and the many old craft workshops in which potters, sculptors and artisans go about their work. Here you have the chance to explore Bhaktapur on your own, stroll through the winding streets, sample traditional Nepalese delicacies or buy souvenirs. Overnight at Bhaktapur Heritage House or an accommodation of similar category (B).

• Day 10: Sightseeing in Bhaktapur and Patan – return drive to Kathmandu

  After breakfast we set off to further discover the cultural treasures of Nepal. First we explore Bhaktapur, one of the three former royal cities in the Kathmandu Valley. Bhaktapur impresses with its well-preserved medieval palaces, artfully decorated temples and winding lanes. Especially worth seeing are Durbar Square with the 55-Window Palace, the Nyatapola temple, the tallest pagoda temple in Nepal, as well as the many traditional potteries and craft workshops. Afterwards we drive on to Patan, also known as Lalitpur, the “City of Art”. Patan is famous for its extraordinary temples and Buddhist stupas as well as for its rich history in art and craft. On Patan Durbar Square the royal palace, the Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple) and numerous small sanctuaries await us, offering an insight into the local culture and religion. • Day 11: Free day in Kathmandu – individual exploration and relaxation

  This day is entirely at your leisure. Use the opportunity to discover Kathmandu on your own, buy souvenirs at the lively markets or visit a cosy café. Those who wish can visit further sights, such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Garden of Dreams or the National Museum. A traditional Nepalese massage or a cookery course are also popular activities. In the evening you enjoy your last night in Kathmandu and can quietly review the impressions of your journey. Overnight at the Dusit Princess Hotel or an accommodation of similar category (B).

• Day 12: Departure – transfer to the airport and flight back home

  Depending on the departure time, the transfer to Kathmandu international airport takes place. We say a warm farewell and wish you a pleasant journey home. With that, your unforgettable trip through Bhutan and Nepal comes to an end (B).

  On request we adapt your trip flexibly and extend it by a few days in Bhutan (e.g. central Bhutan / Bumthang) and in Nepal — naturally including comfortable hotels.
