  • Unforgettable sunrise from Kala Patthar (5,644 m)
  • Additional side trip to Ama Dablam Base Camp
  • Khumbu Glacier & icefall landscapes
  • Sherpa culture in Namche & Tengboche

This is the shortest route to the Everest Base Camp with Kala Patthar, and thanks to its beauty, splendour and history it is perhaps the most famous trekking tour in the world.

The hike to the Ama Dablam Base Camp, the ascent to Kala Patthar with panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse, as well as the hike to Gorak Shep along the Khumbu Glacier to the Mount Everest base camp are the highlights of this route. The tour begins with a fascinating flight to Lukla (2,800 m). From there it first leads through a lush and colourful landscape. You then move into the more austere glaciers and ice fields towards the Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), with an ascent to Kala Patthar (5,644 m).

This trek is an ideal choice for those looking for an exciting and challenging mountain tour. Mountain-hiking experience as well as tolerance for altitude and sure-footedness should be in place.

Our Mount Everest Base Camp tour is carefully planned with sufficient time for acclimatisation, so that you always remain fit and healthy. We have also built in reserve time for any delays that may arise from poor weather.

Detailed itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu – introduction to the trip, equipment check and welcome dinner

Arrival in Kathmandu. You will be picked up at the airport and driven to your hotel. In the afternoon we will discuss the course of the trip with you, and in the evening you are invited to a shared dinner with your mountain guide. Overnight at Hotel Kathmandu Guest House or an accommodation of equal category (D).

Swayambunath Stuppa in Kathmandu Nepal - Nepal Reisen
  • Day 2: Kathmandu sightseeing and in the afternoon drive to Ramechap – approx. 4 hours of driving

Today we explore Kathmandu with a local city guide. The day is flexible and arranged according to what you would like to see. The most popular places and sights generally include Pashupatinath — a Hindu temple with cremation grounds — and the Boudhanath Stupa. From the afternoon we drive to Ramechap for the flight to Lukla. Overnight at a guest house (B).

  • Day 3: Flight to Lukla (2,840 m) – trek to Phakding (2,610 m) – 4–5 hrs, approx. 8 km, ↑ ~150 m, ↓ ~380 m

You will be picked up from the hotel and brought to the airport. There the morning flight to the airstrip in Lukla awaits you. A spectacular start to the trekking tour, as you fly over the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, whose mighty summits then appear in the north. On arrival your mountain guides will organise the porters. We then begin the tour and follow the Dudh Kosi valley to the village of Phakding. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

    Landung in Flughafen Lukla
  • Day 4: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,445 m) – 5–6 hrs, approx. 11 km, ↑ 1,050 m, ↓ 220 m

Today a long and steep ascent lies ahead. We reach the trading town of Namche Bazaar. Halfway up we are rewarded with first short views of Everest and Lhotse. Namche is the largest village in the Khumbu region and essentially also the capital of the Sherpa. From there wonderful views open up onto Thamserku (6,648 m), Khumbila (5,700 m) and Kwangde (6,220 m). Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

    Namche Bazaar, Everest Trekking Nepal
  • Day 5: Acclimatisation day – hike to Khumjung (3,780 m) – approx. 5 hrs, approx. 7 km, ↑ 550 m, ↓ 220 m

In Namche Bazaar we will spend the first of two important days of acclimatisation, so that your body can adjust to the increasing altitude and the associated reduced oxygen content of the air. Initially this means we should expect lighter sleep up here. We start the day with a morning walk up to the high ridge above Namche. As we climb the mountain trail, beautiful views open out again and again onto the main route to the Everest base camp that we will be walking in the coming days. High up on the ridge we round the mountainside and reach the viewpoint of Mount Everest. The views during the hike up and down are simply spectacular. On the way back we take our lunch and hike on to Khumjung. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Trekker in der Everest Region - zum Everest Base Camp
  • Day 6: Trek to Deboche (3,770 m) – 5–6 hrs, approx. 10 km, ↑ 450 m, ↓ 460 m

From Namche Bazaar we cross the Dudh Kosi (Dudh: milk, Kosi: river) on our trail. The route leads through rhododendron forests with wonderful views up the valley to Everest and Ama Dablam. After we have passed the river at Phunki Tenga we begin the ascent through forest to Tengboche. From Tengboche Monastery we enjoy spectacular views of Everest (8,849 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Kangtega (6,782 m), Thamserku (6,623 m) and Tobuche (6,495 m). We reach our lodge in Deboche after a 15-minute walk from Tengboche. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Kloster Tengboche mit Blick auf Mt. Everest und Mt. Ama Dablam
  • Day 7: Trek to Pangboche (3,930 m) and Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,570 m) – 6–7 hrs, approx. 12 km, ↑ 950 m, ↓ 790 m

After the descent to the Imja Khola river, we cross it and gently climb up to the village of Pangboche. After arrival at the lodge we take an early lunch and set off on the path to Ama Dablam Base Camp. This gives us the opportunity to branch off from the actual Everest Base Camp trail and to discover a quieter area of the Khumbu region, at the foot of one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Should you prefer to take a shorter route, you can also hike to the viewpoint above the Pangboche river and visit the small Gompa monastery. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Am Ama Dablam Base Camp 4600m, Everest Nepal Trekking
  • Day 8: Trek to Dingboche (4,350 m) – 5–6 hrs, approx. 11 km, ↑ 600 m, ↓ 180 m

The hike beyond the gompa today takes us past the summer pastures of the yaks, where the spartan life of the Sherpa also becomes clearly visible and tangible. Beyond that, it is only natural that the overnight options here reflect the ruggedness of our surroundings. Most of the trails here rise comparatively gently — fitting for the calm and serenity that is advisable at these altitudes anyway. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

  • Day 9: Acclimatisation day Dingboche – hike to Chukhung (4,730 m) or Nagajun Hill (5,050 m) – approx. 5–6 hrs, 8–10 km

A second day of acclimatisation to unfamiliar altitudes, with the option to hike up Nagajun Hill (about 5,050 m) or to the village of Chukhung, with wonderful views of Ama Dablam, Makalu and other summits, interspersed with lakes and glaciers. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Yaks in der Everest Region in Nepal - zum Everest Base Camp
  • Day 10: Trek to Lobuche (4,931 m) – 5 hrs, approx. 8 km, ↑ 650 m, ↓ 70 m

From Dingboche we follow our trail around a ridge above Pheriche and approach the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We cross the moraine and finally reach Dughla. From there the route continues uphill to the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, before we turn left to reach the Sherpa memorial after an intermediate ascent. From the memorial the trail drops slightly and follows the western side of the valley to Lobuche. Tawache and Nuptse are spectacular summits, rising almost 3,000 m above the village. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Auf dem Weg zum Everest Base Camp, Oberhalb von Dingboche
  • Day 11: Lobuche – Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) – back to Gorak Shep (5,170 m) – 7–8 hrs, approx. 12 km, ↑ 650 m, ↓ 420 m

After an early start we follow the trail along the western side of the broad Khumbu valley. The cone-shaped summit of Pumori, more than 7,000 m high, now comes into view. Tomorrow we will see it from a much higher perspective, as well as Mount Everest from Kala Patthar. The trail drops briefly to a sandy area at Gorak Shep. It should take between 2 and 3 hours to reach Gorak Shep from Lobuche. After a light lunch, those of the group who wish will hike to the Everest base camp. The walk to base camp and back to Gorak Shep takes about 5 to 6 hours. This trail runs mainly across a rocky moraine before we walk over the glacier itself at the end. From Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) a spectacular view awaits us of the Khumbu Icefall at the foot of Mount Everest. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

    Am Everest Base Camp 5364m
  • Day 12: Gorak Shep – Kala Patthar (5,644 m) – descent to Pheriche (4,250 m) – 7–8 hrs, approx. 13 km, ↑ 400 m, ↓ 1,700 m

In the morning we slowly ascend to Kala Patthar, which at its highest point of 5,644 m marks the high point of our trekking trip. A goal that is well worth it, as from up there we can enjoy fascinating views of Everest — the summit of which we could not yet see the day before from base camp, since from below it is hidden by mighty walls of rock and ice. From today’s summit we now also have an unobstructed view of the other Himalayan giants — Pumori, Changtse, Nuptse and Lhotse. After taking our time to enjoy the unique long-distance and downward views, we descend again and take lunch at the tea house in Gorak Shep. Afterwards we begin our further descent and return in the afternoon to the lower-lying Pheriche, where the higher air pressure once again supplies us with more oxygen. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Am Kala Patthar 5644 mit Blick auf Mt. Everest, Lothse, Nuptse
  • Day 13: Trek to Phortse (3,810 m) – 6 hrs, approx. 11 km, ↑ 400 m, ↓ 840 m

Shortly after leaving Pheriche we cross a bridge over the Khumbu river and rejoin the trail that we took to Dingboche on day 8. Just before we reach the village of Pangboche, we take a different path that skirts the hillside and arrive at the village of Phortse. Here we can look forward to a magnificent view of Tengboche Monastery and Mount Kangtega, 6,783 m high, in the background. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

  • Day 14: Trek to Monjo (2,850 m) – 6–7 hrs, approx. 14 km, ↑ 500 m, ↓ 1,450 m

After leaving Phortse we descend steeply through forests of birch and rhododendron to the Dudh Kosi. After crossing the river there is a steady uphill walk to the Mong La pass at 3,963 m. From here we descend to Tashinga and return to the main route towards base camp as far as Monjo. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

Auf dem Weg zum Everest Base Camp, am Aussichtspunkt oberhalb von Namche Bazaar
  • Day 15: Return to Lukla (2,840 m) – 5 hrs, approx. 13 km, ↑ 650 m, ↓ 660 m

From Monjo we continue downhill through the Dudh Kosi valley and the villages of Phakding, Ghat and Cheplung. At Chaurikharka we begin the ascent over the last hill of the trek to reach Lukla. Once we have arrived at the Sunrise Lodge we can relax and enjoy our final evening with our mountain guides and our wonderful porters. Overnight at a tea house lodge (B|L|D).

  • Day 16: Flight to Ramechap and drive to Kathmandu – approx. 4 hours of driving

If the weather in Lukla is good, we will fly back to Ramechap early in the morning and be driven on to Kathmandu. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight at Kathmandu Guest House or an accommodation of equal category (B).

  • Day 17: Free day in Kathmandu – buffer time for possible flight delays

Today is at your leisure, which you can spend relaxing, with further sightseeing or shopping in Thamel. A good last chance to pick up a few souvenirs at short notice. Overnight at Kathmandu Guest House or an accommodation of equal category (B).

  • Day 18: Flight back home

Farewell and transfer to Kathmandu airport. End of the trip (B).

We reserve the right to make changes to the programme due to special events, force majeure or weather conditions.

Autumn: Pleasant temperatures, the best long-distance views, fresh greenery.

Spring: Mild climate and spectacular rhododendron blossom (especially March/April).

Winter (December–February): Off-season with clear views and few trekkers – ideal for those who can handle the cold.

Monsoon (June–September): Trekking only possible in dry regions such as Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo.

🛡️ Insurance

Travel health insurance including rescue and recovery costs is essential for your own safety and a prerequisite for booking our trips. Taking out trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance is strongly recommended. Particularly cheap flights are usually not free to rebook or cancel. In addition, weather-related or health complications in Nepal may make it necessary to cut a trip short.

We have asked ERGO Reiseversicherung to put together various coverage packages for you. You can book the right travel health insurance at www.reiseversicherung.de .
