Tour Extension: Hike on Mount Kenya and in the Aberdares

Detailed itinerary

• Day 1: From Nairobi to the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas (approx. 2,950 m) – approx. 3 hours of hiking

  In the morning we leave Nairobi and drive towards Chogoria — a scenically attractive stretch that takes about four hours. Along the way we enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing on into the dense mountain rainforest of Mount Kenya. About halfway up we get out and hike for roughly three hours through the lush vegetation up to the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas at approx. 2,950 m. Here a warm dinner and the first night on the mountain await us. Overnight in the hut (B|L|D).

• Day 2: Hike to Lake Ellis (approx. 3,450 m) and up Mugi Hill (approx. 3,700 m) – drive to the Silva Montana Hotel – approx. 7–8 hours of hiking

  After an early breakfast our hike begins with fantastic views over the surrounding highlands — in clear weather even as far as the snow-capped peaks of Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m), two of the three peaks of Mount Kenya. At a leisurely pace we reach Lake Ellis after about four hours and 12 kilometres, where we take an extended break with a picnic. In the afternoon we optionally climb the neighbouring Mugi Hill (approx. 3,700 m) — an ideal acclimatisation walk. Afterwards we meet our vehicle and drive back to the comfortable Silva Montana Hotel, where we wind down the day with dinner. Overnight at the hotel (B|L|D).

  

  

  

• Day 3: Onward journey to Aberdare National Park and hike to the waterfalls – approx. 4 hours of hiking

  After breakfast (around 7:00 a.m.) we continue our journey — via Embu to Nyeri Town, where we stock up on fresh supplies. After a total of about 3–4 hours of driving we reach the Kiandongoro Gate of Aberdare National Park (approx. 2,500 m). After registration we drive on to the Fishing Bandas, where lunch awaits us. In the afternoon we set off on a varied hike of about 4 hours to the impressive Karuru and Chania waterfalls — accompanied by a local guide, an armed ranger and an escort vehicle. Dinner and overnight take place back at the cosy bandas. Overnight at the hotel (B|L|D).

  

  

  

• Day 4: Ascent of Mount Satima (4,001 m) – 7–8 hours of hiking

  Early breakfast and a short drive (approx. 1 hour) to the Wandares roadhead at around 3,400 m. From here a wonderful trail leads us through open grass and moorland to the highest peak of the Aberdares — Mount Satima (4,001 m). The ascent takes about 4–5 hours, the descent back to the vehicle another 2–3 hours. In good visibility the view reaches as far as majestic Mount Kenya. After the tour we drive comfortably to the charming Aberdare Country Club, where we wind down the evening at our leisure. Overnight at the hotel (B|L|D).

• Day 5: Onward journey – back to Nairobi or safari adventure

  From the Aberdare Country Club you continue your journey — either with the drive back to Nairobi to connect with your onward travel, or directly on to an exciting safari in the nearby national park. The choice of how your adventure continues is yours (B).
